Champions League: Predicted Manchester United line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Villarreal

Manchester United entertain Villarreal at Old Trafford in Wednesday’s Champions League group stage clash.

The Red Devils suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will hope for a strong response against Villarreal, but the game may not be straightforward.

While United have the superior side on paper, the La Liga outfit beat them in the Europa League final last term.

Gerard Moreno’s potential absence will be a boost for the Red Devils, but Solskjaer also has injury concerns to deal with.

The Red Devils are aiming to register their first points after a shock 2-1 defeat at Young Boys in the group stage opener.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Line-up:

David de Gea has firmly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper this term amid multiple stand-out displays.

He produced several key saves against Villa last week, but was eventually beaten by a powerful Kortney Hause header.

The Spaniard is expected to start in goal ahead of Dean Henderson.

There could be three enforced changes in defence with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw missing out.

Wan-Bissaka is serving a one-game ban after his sending-off at Young Boys. Diogo Dalot is set to replace him at right-back.

Shaw is struggling with a muscle injury sustained in the opening half against Villa. Alex Telles is his natural replacement at left-back.

Club captain Harry Maguire is nursing a calf problem that saw him substituted after the hour mark against the Villans.

His absence could pave the way for Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly to partner Raphael Varane in central defence. The former may get the nod.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has persisted with two defensive midfielders. Scott McTominay and Fred have been his preferred choices.

It won’t come as a surprise if the duo continue. Further forward, Paul Pogba may get another game from the left-wing position.

Bruno Fernandes rued a late penalty miss at the weekend, and he will be keen to make amends from the number 10 spot.

Mason Greenwood had a mixed game against Villa. He had plenty of shots, but most of them were directly at the goalkeeper.

He could have squared a pass for Fernandes for an easy goal in the 17th minute, but ended up with a tame effort that was saved.

There was criticism from some fans over his performance. He could drop to the bench with Jadon Sancho starting on the right side of the attack.

Up front, there was no question marks. Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to lead the line ahead of Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial.

Ronaldo appears on course to make history. He will become the record appearance holder in the competition if he plays on Wednesday.
