Carrick reveals disappointment

Manchester-United-v-Southampton-Premier-LeagueMichael Carrick has revealed the disappointment inside the dressing room after United saw their 10-match unbeaten run come to an end against Southampton on Sunday.

United delivered an utterly abysmal display, struggling to unlock Southamtpon’s brilliantly organised back four and failing to register a single shot on target, as Ronald Koeman’s man leapfrogged on the table to go third. The result saw the media pile pressure on Louis Van Gaal, whose insistence on deploying 3-5-2 system is yet to bear fruits.

“It was a big disappointment,” said Carrick. “It was a blow to lose that game in the way it panned out.

“We looked the one team that was looking to score a goal. To concede like we did – out of nowhere pretty much – and to lose the game was hugely disappointing.

“With where they are in the league, with them being in the same situation as us – wanting to push on and be closer to the top – it was a big day for us and we’ve let one slip.

“You don’t want to be battling for third or fourth place, we want to be up there, right at the top and that’s the challenge we’ve got to set ourselves.”
