Carragher admits that ‘special player’ Lisandro Martinez has proven him wrong after initial criticism

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has performed a major U-turn on Lisandro Martinez, admitting that the Argentine is a ‘special player’.

After Brentford defeated Manchester United 4-0 earlier in the season, Carragher said that he was ‘convinced’ that Martinez wouldn’t thrive in Premier League as a centre-back due to his lack of height.

However, the 45-year-old has been proven wrong by Martinez who has been one of the best defenders in the English top flight this term.

He admitted on The Overlap Live Fan Debate that he was wrong in his initial assessment of the defender.

“Lisandro Martínez has been brilliant,” Carragher said. “To be that small and play centre-back, you have to be a special player.

“He’s been a big part of Manchester United’s spirit.

“At the World Cup with Argentina, we saw him have that fight – with him and Casemiro coming in, they feel more powerful and strong.

“Someone of that size will get exposed in the air – that has to happen at some stage.

“Every player has weaknesses; the best players hide them or make sure they don’t get exposed.

“He’s a really good player and he’s surprised me with the way he’s coped.”

‘Brilliant’ Lisandro Martinez needs new critics

After United’s lethargic start to the season, many people raised concerns that a 5ft 9ins tall centre-back wouldn’t be able to make it in the Premier League.

However, ‘The Butcher’ has been a revelation and a key part of United’s success this term.

He has won 27 aerial duels, the second most in the United squad behind Casemiro. He is not afraid of competing against the centre-forwards, no matter how tall they are.

The 25-year-old plays with his heart on his sleeve and defends with absolutely everything he has, making him a favourite with United fans.

Not only he has been a rock at the back but also helps his team to attack by playing line-breaking passes.

His pinpoint ball-playing skills make him a standout compared to other Premier League defenders.

His performances have rightly silenced Carragher and all the other pundits who doubted him due to his diminutive stature.
