Can Man Utd complete double deal worth €145m this week?

Manchester United have been in prolonged negotiations for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez this summer, but it now appears they could be close to signing both players.

De Jong has obviously been the priority target for manager Erik ten Hag. A broad agreement of €65 million plus €20m is in the process of being finalised, but Barcelona must first sort his deferred payments.

The midfielder is currently owed around €20m in wages and loyalty bonuses, but United have been given assurances that the midfielder is prepared to join them once his salary debts are settled.

United’s CEO Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough were spotted in Barcelona on Monday which suggests that the club are edging ever closer to a deal. Hopefully, the transfer is done this week.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have also stepped up negotiations for Martinez and according to Fabrizio Romano, the club are now ‘feeling confident‘ of signing him with Ajax prepared to negotiate a transfer fee.

At the start of the month, it was believed that Ajax would be willing to sell the centre-back for €50m. However, that is no longer the case. Mike Verweij reported yesterday that Ajax are asking for €60m.

United, who recently made a bid of €45m plus €5m in add-ons, will have to make a renewed proposal, but there is growing optimism that Martinez will end up reuniting with Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old has reportedly agreed personal terms. Quick deals for the duo this week would allow them to integrate with the squad for pre-season such that they can get right into the thick of things.
