Nicky Butt is expected to remain as Manchester United as a coach once the Louis Van Gaal era finally gets underway in its earnest, with the former United midfielder set to continue his role with the club’s academy.
A product of the Class of ’92, Butt will continue to manage the Under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League and he’ll also continue to work alongside Warren Joyce with the Under-21 side, after having being temporarily promoted to the first team fold by Ryan Giggs when the Welshman replaced David Moyes for the last four games of last season.
The Daily Mail reports that a source close to the club confirmed that both Butt and Joyce will remain on the coaching staff.
“The Class of 92 are very important to Manchester United.
“Nicky is a member of staff at the club, he has a position here and he is working with Warren Joyce, who will remain at the club.”
While Butt is expected to continue his coaching career at the club, Paul Scholes is unlikely to be part of Van Gaal’s backroom staff despite having been involved in a coaching role during Giggs’ interim tenure, while Phil Neville’s future also remains unclear and is likely to be resolved once he returns from Brazil where he’s been working as a pundit for the BBC.
“There are obviously processes in place and he will have his structures and a team, and you just hope you are a part of that,” said Neville, who arrived to Old Trafford as part of Moyes’ staff last summer, just before the start of the World Cup.
“He is obviously a busy man with Holland at the World Cup. It is good to get the new manager announced and the club can start looking forward again and looking to improve on last season.
“I hope to stay and it is business as usual as far as I am concerned,” he said. “I was first-team coach last year. I am not sure what my role will be next year but over the next couple of weeks I will find out about my role and hopefully I will be involved at Manchester United.”
