Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has made a brutal admission on the club’s Premier League title chances following the 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.
The Red Devils suffered a disappointing defeat to their arch-rivals at the weekend. They were second-best for most of the game and could have lost by a bigger margin.
United have now picked up only three points from their first three league fixtures. They are already six points behind the top spot and four adrift of the top four.
In an interview with DAZN (via Goal), Fernandes said that he is perfectly aware that the current United squad is not ready to win the Premier League this season.
He added that they are indeed fighting for the title with the concrete and real objective to finish in the top four which would assure Champions League football.
He said: “Yes, I am perfectly aware that this Manchester United is not ready to win the Premier League.
“We are, indeed, fighting for the title with the concrete and real objective of trying to finish in the top four, in the places that give access to the Champions League.
“But there is still a lot to improve for the greater objective, and for my dream, which is to one day win this championship.”
United had a good curtain-raiser against Fulham, but they have struggled for ball control in the last two outings. The full-backs have been caught out of position too.
Manuel Ugarte could improve the club’s fortunes by replacing Casemiro in the holding midfield role, but the club also need to capitalise on clear-cut chances up front.
Joshua Zirkzee was guilty of missing two brilliant scoring opportunities against Liverpool. The outlook of the game would have been different, had he converted them.
United will return after the international break with an away fixture at Southampton. It will be an early Saturday kick-off and the club must returning to winning ways.
The Saints are yet to get off the mark on their top-flight return. United have the perfect chance to secure a morale-boosting win to gain momentum for the games ahead.
