Bruno Fernandes has won Manchester United’s player of the month award for August. This is the fourth time the Portuguese has won the award since his move to Old Trafford in January. The 25-year-old amassed 48% votes on Manchester United’s official app according to the club’s official website. Fernandes finished just above Anthony Martial in the voting. The Frenchman finished with 44% ahead of Fred who was third with 8% votes.
Fernandes has taken the centre stage at United since his transfer in January. And his presence has proved to be monumental for United as the attacking midfielder scored 12 and bagged eight assists across all competitions.
He continued to make strides in the United colors in the month of August too. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rested Fernandes in the month’s opening game against LASK in the return leg of Europa League’s round of 16. He came back to the starting XI for the next two games and made all the noise (from the spot!)
Fernandes’ spot-kick won the game for United against Copenhagen in the quarter-final. He maintained his 100% penalty conversion tally from the spot for the club.
Unfortunately, United were knocked out after failing to convert a number of chances in the second half against Sevilla. The defeat finally culminated the prolonged season for United and it was another great month for the former Sporting Lisbon man.
Fernandes has won the award for three consecutive months since he completed his move at the end of January. The only time he was beaten to the player of the month award was in July by Mason Greenwood. This means United’s newest acquisition has won this award in four out of five ‘playing’ months he’s been involved in.
Not only this, but Fernandes also finished as Europa League’s top goal-scorer with eight goals just one ahead of former United striker Romelu Lukaku.
Fernandes’ adventurous and risk-taking approach has been a breath of fresh air for Manchester United. Despite enjoying a brilliant debut season, certainly, we haven’t seen all of him yet. The Portuguese, who will turn 26 next month, is expected to be a mainstay in Solskjaer’s squad.
