Bruno Fernandes enters Manchester United immortality with unprecedented fifth Sir Matt Busby award

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has officially written his name into the history books at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has been crowned the winner of the prestigious Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award following another extraordinary campaign in 2025-26.

The Portuguese superstar has now claimed the famous individual honour for a record fifth time, moving ahead of club legends Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea, who each won it four times.

No player in Manchester United history has ever lifted the trophy on five separate occasions.

This is an incredible testament to his consistency and influence over the last six years.

Even during United’s most difficult and chaotic periods, Fernandes has consistently remained the shining light dragging the team forward.

He first won the award in consecutive seasons during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns after transforming the entire mood around Old Trafford.

Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford briefly interrupted his dominance over the following two years, but Fernandes has now reclaimed the honour for three straight seasons.

The United captain has once again produced sensational attacking numbers this term, registering 19 assists in the English top flight.

Just one more assist would see Fernandes equal the all-time Premier League record for most assists in a single season, currently shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

He recently won the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award and United’s Players’ Player of the Year honour.

He is also one of the strongest contenders for the PFA Player of the Year award despite fierce competition from David Raya and Erling Haaland.

What makes Fernandes’ season even more remarkable is the fact that he spent the first half of the campaign operating deeper in midfield under former manager Ruben Amorim.

Fernandes continues to prove why he belongs among the elite midfielders in world football with his astonishing numbers and relentless consistency.

Beyond the statistics and trophies, the United captain has also become a role model for the next generation of players arriving at Carrington.

Saudi Pro League clubs reportedly offered Fernandes life-changing money last summer, yet he still chose loyalty over riches by staying at a United side that had finished 15th in the table.

That decision alone perfectly captures his love and emotional connection to this football club.
