Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered another quality performance for Portugal during their 5-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina in a Euro 2024 qualifier.
The Euro 2016 champions booked their spot in the tournament last week after a 3-2 win over Slovakia, but manager Roberto Martinez still decided to pick a strong starting XI.
Fernandes played 79 minutes against Bosnia on the road and he produced another fine display. The playmaker registered a goal during a rampant first half for Portugal.
Aside from his goal contribution, he had 54 touches with 35 out of his 43 passes completed. Fernandes also completed four long balls and won three duels and two tackles.
It was a comfortable victory for the Portuguese against Bosnia, who had no answer. All five goals were scored before the break and they were lucky to avoid further embarrassment.
United need Fernandes in peak form in coming months
The 29-year-old has been the club’s main creative outlet since his move from Sporting in 2020.
This season, Fernandes has accumulated two goals and two assists from 10 appearances, but much more is expected from the captain, who likes to lead from the front for the Red Devils.
Fernandes has had more action sequences in the final third in the Premier League this campaign (295) than any other player. Hopefully, this will translate into more goal involvements.
The midfielder had a huge upturn in form following the World Cup last year and the fans will be anticipating more of the same after Portugal’s qualification for Euro 2024.
United return to Premier League action this weekend against Sheffield United on the road. Fernandes is expected to start from his preferred number 10 position at Bramall Lane.
