Benzema could be the right man for Manchester United

Manchester United have had a tough first half of the season and with the month-long transfer window eating away, there is a need for the club to move faster and strengthen their weak areas before the final four months of the season. A number of players have been linked with Manchester United in the short winter transfer window and though not much is moving, a lot is expected to happen in the final week of the transfer window. One area that has been deficient for Manchester United is the attack, as the team ranks high among those that have scored the fewest goals in the league so far. Save for a rather high scoring run in the Champions League before their exit, you are likely to find bleak figures on Sportytrader at any random time you check what is the score for the football games tonight and that is an area that needs urgent attention. So what solutions are being laid down to address this glaring deficiency that has Scott McTominay, a defensive midfielder, as the team’s leading scorer in the league? Well, one drastic move is the talk of town and it will be a big one should Erik ten Hag pull it off.

Subject to debate

Manchester United have been linked with former French international Karim Benzema. How good a move this will be if it happens remains a subject of debate, given the stage the striker is in his career. Whatever the case, if it happens it will be a big one and will force a reorganization in the Manchester United attack. For starters, Benzema is currently contracted to Al Ittihad of the Saudi Arabia Pro League. He was one of the top players who massively left Europe for Saudi Arabia at the start of the current season as the Pro League teams splashed out the cash to attract top stars in an attempt to rebrand and market their league. However, as it has come to be, the league isn’t as comfortable and lucrative as initially thought and many of the stars are said to want out. Benzema is reported to have missed a number of training sessions as he tries to force a move out.

Possible destination

Manchester United has emerged as a possible destination for the Frenchman and it has been backed by a number of top stakeholders in the game. However, before this move comes through, there will be a need to address the sticky issue of how it affects Rasmus Hojlund, the man brought in during the summer with a long-term view in attack. With his experience, it is thought Benzema would support Hojlund more than he’d stifle his growth. Hojlund has scored just two Premier League goals and in most cases, he has seemed to lack support and good link up play upfront. This can be swiftly addressed by pairing him up with Benzema, who at his time with Real Madrid, proved to be a great runner and clever player in the box. The team’s poor tally of 24 goals in 21 matches can be easily addressed by such a move but the challenge remains the engagements involved in ripping up Benzema’s contract and bringing him to Old Trafford in under two weeks.
