Benjamin Pavard convinced to join Man Utd by Erik ten Hag but move currently blocked

Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard has been convinced to join Manchester United by manager Erik ten Hag, according to French publication L’Equipe.

The France international has less than 11 months left on his Bayern contract, and he has already revealed his desire to leave the German champions this summer.

It is now reported by L’Equipe that United are his preferred destination. He has been convinced by manager Erik ten Hag and the project is appealing to him.

However, a transfer has been ‘currently’ blocked by Harry Maguire’s decision to stay at the club.

United were aiming to sell the England international to West Ham United recently, but the move is now off with the centre-back prepared to fight for his spot.

Pavard deal seems unlikely without centre-back exit

United have already spent £162 million for the purchase of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, which is much higher than their pre-sales budget of £120m.

The club have recouped some funds by selling Alex Telles, Fred and Anthony Elanga, but they need more departures in order to make one or more signings before the deadline.

A centre-back and a defensive midfielder are among the manager’s priorities, but only one of them may be signed. With Maguire’s decision to stay, a deal for Pavard seems unlikely.

Pavard would be a good upgrade on Maguire with his strong distribution. The World Cup winner also possesses good tackling skills and has a good aerial presence.

Bayern are open to selling him for at least £38m, but United look set to miss out on his services.

However, the club could sign a new midfielder before the deadline. The Red Devils have already sold Fred and they are exploring the potential sale of Donny van de Beek.

His departure could pave the way for a move for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat. The Moroccan has already agreed personal terms in principle with United for a transfer.
