BBC Sport reporter provides fresh update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Bruno Fernandes

BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone has provided a fresh update on Manchester United’s ongoing attempt to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon during the ongoing transfer window.

The Portugal international has been on the club’s radar since the summer of 2019 but the interest has not necessarily materialised in the form of a transfer agreement.

A recent report from Sky Sports claimed that United are reluctant to pay more than £60m for the playmaker despite the fact that Sporting have set a £68m price tag on the player’s head.

BBC Sport’s Simon Stones has now revealed that there has been no breakthrough in the negotiations between the sides with neither Sporting nor United willing to change their valuation of the Portuguese.

United have lacked the presence of a creative midfielder, who can contribute with regular goals and assists and things have recently got worse with forward Marcus Rashford out for the next couple of months with a stress fracture in his back.

Anthony Martial, in particular, has got the service in the past few Premier League matches to find the net but he has been unable to do so due to his poor finishing and slow decision-making in the box.

Still, there has been no urgency from the United board to push through an agreement with Sporting for Fernandes and the next few days should give a clear indication whether a deal will go through.

Manchester United recently failed to close the six-point gap to fourth-placed Chelsea after an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford. The club have now failed to beat the Clarets at home in four successive league games.
