Bayern Munich veteran midfielder is available: should Manchester United make move?

According to reliable German journalist Christian Falk, Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez has left the club.

Javi Martinez arrived at Bayern at the onset of the Pep Guardiola revolution.  He has served the club for eight years, playing 146 games and winning 20 major trophies in the process.

A player who is very comfortable with the ball, Javi Martinez is the kind of player who likes to exploit gaps in the opposition team.

His work rate both on and off the ball is a phenomenon in itself. He is a good dribbler and keeps the game ticking.

The most important aspect of Martinez’s game is his defensive output. He is adept at pressing and can play as a center-back too.

Martinez had a year left in his current contract but has left the club early. Bayern’s insistence on not letting a player leave for free may be a reason for this.

This can be beneficial for Manchester United.

United’ defensive troubles are a cause of concern for OGS. The lack of a strong, experienced, and commanding center-back to partner Harry Maguire may be a reason for this.

Another reason for this is the lack of a good defensive midfielder.

The attacking nature of United’s midfield puts a big onus on the holding midfielder to help the defence.

United have invested heavily with regards to this position in Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk and Nemanja Matic from Chelsea. But, both of them are inconsistent therefore making them unreliable.

Scott McTominay is another option. But, his inexperience and inconsistency do not guarantee him a regular starting spot.

This is where Javi Martinez comes in.

His experience in top levels of European football makes him a big plus for a youth-oriented team like Man United. His abilities to play both holding midfielder and center-back position are also sure to come in handy.

His lack of speed would be a problem for the Red Devils, so would his injury record. His current age would also force United to sign a replacement one-two years after signing him.

Another big concern is that Javi is close to securing a return to Spanish side Athletic Bilbao.

He is valued at €10m by Transfermarkt.
