Bayern Munich have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba this summer, Spanish outlet Fichajes claims.
The Frenchman’s current contract with the Red Devils expires on June 30, and it appears certain that he will leave on a free transfer.
Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have been highlighted as possible destinations, and Bayern have now entered the race.
It is reported that the £49.5 million-rated star could be tempted by the opportunity to try out a fresh challenge in the German Bundesliga.
Our view:
There is no official confirmation that Pogba is leaving United, but it appears quite clear with there being no progress in contract talks.
Manchester City were linked with a shock approach recently, but the Frenchman looks set to pursue a fresh challenge away from England.
Bayern are now being reported as potential candidates, but the speculation seems rather made up with their ongoing pursuit of Konrad Laimer.
The Bundesliga giants have had concrete talks with the Austrian’s entourage, and a formal bid to RB Leipzig is expected soon.
Compared to Pogba, Laimer is four years younger and would also provide a good resale value in future while commanding lesser wages.
Laimer could be available for a knockdown price with his deal expiring in June 2023. On the contrary, Pogba would command a significant signing-on fee.
Hence, we don’t see the Frenchman heading to the Allianz Arena this summer. A move to Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid seems more realistic.
