Manchester United came into the summer transfer window looking to sign two new central midfielders. We have already completed a deal for one of those by bringing Fred to Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk.
We have since been linked to numerous potential signings in this position, with the most notable being Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
The highly-rated Serbian international has been on our radar for a while, coming off the back of excellent season with the Rome club where he scored 12 goals and recorded three assists in his 35 Serie A appearances this past season.
Barcelona have also been strongly linked with a deal for the 23-year-old this summer but it now appears the La Liga champions have pulled out of the race to sign Milinkovic-Savic. That is according to a report on talkSport anyway.
Manchester United continue to show interest in the Lazio star, as the Independent report that we are still in the hunt for Milinkovic-Savic. This despite the report in talkSport saying that we ended our interest earlier in the month when Lazio demanded a staggering £131 million for their player.
The fee is absolutely absurd given that Lazio aren’t even in the Champions League.
Whilst we may have a free run at signing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, there are certainly other top central midfielders out there at significantly better value. Given that we are looking to bring in at least one more defensive player too, our transfer budget should not be splashed out on one single player this summer.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is having an impressive World Cup so far but he and Serbia face their toughest test to date later today when they take on Brazil in their final group game.
