Manchester United Women are on the verge of signing Barcelona forward Geyse Ferreira, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo.
The Red Devils suffered a huge blow earlier in the summer with Alessia Russo joining Arsenal on a free transfer following the expiry of her contract.
The club are now close to landing Ferreira as her replacement. The Brazilian was spotted at Old Trafford earlier this week and she is now ‘one step away’ from a transfer.
United are currently sorting out the final details of the move, and it is only a matter of time before the club make an official announcement over her arrival.
Ferreira would be a good replacement for Russo
Russo was one of United’s best performers in the Women’s Super League last season. She registered 10 goals and one assist from 20 games under manager Marc Skinner.
At one point, the Red Devils were top of the standings ahead of Chelsea, but the Blues eventually leapfrogged them. They won the league by a two-point margin.
To lose Russo is definitely a big blow for United, but the club are now on the cusp of landing Ferreira, who should be a quality replacement for the England international.
The 25-year-old amassed 10 goals and seven assists from 34 outings last term. She is better than Russo in terms of distribution as well as defensive attributes such as tackling.
Chelsea have won the last four WSL titles. United gave them a strong challenge last term, and will be aiming to go one better and win their maiden title this season.
