Axel Tuanzebe joins Ipswich Town after leaving Manchester United

Championship club Ipswich Town have announced the signing of Axel Tuanzebe following his release from Manchester United.

Real Betis were one of the clubs keen on the defender, but the 25-year-old has opted to remain in England to continue his career.

Tuanzebe has signed a one-year deal with Town, but there is an option to extend his deal by another 12 months.

The Man United academy graduate spent last season on loan with Stoke City in the Championship and has now returned to the second tier as he strives to get his career back on track.

Tuanzebe joined the Red Devils youth team in 2006 before making his senior team debut in January 2017.

The DR Congo-born defender made 37 appearances across all competitions for Man United having spent five seasons out on loan.

His last first-team appearance for the Old Trafford club was in the 2021 Europa League final against Villarreal.

Tuanzebe had three loan spells with Aston Villa in 2017-18, 2018-19 and the first half of 2021-22 before joining Napoli for the rest of the campaign.

He spent the second half of last season at Stoke, but injuries limited him to just five appearances.

Tuanzebe held talks with Sheffield United and Luton Town but eventually joined the Tractor Boys having spent the last week training with them.

The defender displayed plenty of potential as a youngster, winning the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in 2014-15 and the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year in 2016-17.

He displayed his quality during his second loan spell at Villa Park but has been unable to build on those performances.

Tuanzebe helped Villa seal Premier League promotion, and Ipswich will hope he can rediscover that form as they eye a return to the top flight.
