Manchester United Women are away at Spanish side Atletico Madrid in their second UEFA Women’s Champions League fixture on Thursday evening.
United beat Norwegian side Valerenga 1-0 in their opening fixture, with Maya Le Tissier scoring from the penalty spot to hand them their first-ever victory in the competition.
Meanwhile, Atleti recorded the biggest victory in the first round, thrashing Austrian side SKN St. Polten 6-0.
Match preview
Man United and Atleti head into this fixture with contrasting fortunes domestically.
United fought from a goal back to beat Everton 4-1 in the Women’s Super League on Sunday, extending their unbeaten start to the season.
By contrast, Atleti suffered a humiliating 6-0 loss at the hands of defending champions Barcelona in the Liga F, which was their first defeat of the season.
Despite the heavy defeat, the Spanish side are expected to pose a serious challenge to United, given their pedigree in the competition. They have participated multiple times, reaching the knockout stages four times.
This clash would be a test of Man United’s strength at the European level.
Head-to-head
This will be the first ever meeting between Man United and Atleti.
Team news
United will be without Millie Turner, who is not expected to return to action until December, but it remains to be seen whether Celin Bizet Donnum will be fit for the clash.
Atleti could be without Rosa Otermin, Carmen Menayo, Sheila Guijarro and Macarena Portales for United’s visit.
Where to watch
The fixture will be streamed live on Disney+, this season’s rights holder for the Women’s Champions League.
There will also be a watchalong on MUTV, the United App and on the club’s official YouTube channel.
