Atletico Madrid and Roma interested in Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Atletico Madrid and Roma have been credited with an interest in signing Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka during the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old had been the undisputed right-back for the Red Devils for the past two seasons, and he started the current campaign similarly with Diogo Dalot being the back-up.

However, his situation has changed over the course of the season. Under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, Dalot has been the regular starter since the beginning of the year.

The Portuguese has looked better going forward compared to the Crystal Palace graduate, and there are suggestions that he could keep his place over Wan-Bissaka next term.

Incoming United boss Erik ten Hag also prefers working with attacking full-backs. There is the possibility that Wan-Bissaka could be shown the exit door for a new signing.

According to Todofichajes, Atletico are now interested in his services. They view him as a replacement for Sime Vrsaljko, who is set to leave when his contract expires in June.

However, the La Liga giants could face stiff competition from Jose Mourinho’s Roma. The former United boss has personally called Wan-Bissaka to convince him.

Both clubs are likely to consider a loan deal with an option to buy.

Our view:

Wan-Bissaka is one of the best tacklers in the Premier League. He has averaged nearly three tackles per game since his big-money move from Crystal Palace in 2019.

The 24-year-old has also made key interceptions for the Red Devils, but the main criticism from some fans has been his lack of attacking threat which is quite evident.

Wan-Bissaka is not the best when it comes to making overlapping runs behind the opposition defence. The right-back has also struggled in delivering crosses in the box.

This has contributed to him dropping down the pecking order this year, but Dalot has not made a direct goal contribution either. A new right-back could be a top priority for the summer.

Ten Hag will make a final decision over Wan-Bissaka’s future. If the Dutchman views attacking contributions as the main requirement, the defender could be on his way out.

Diego Simeone played a key role in reviving Kieran Trippier’s career and Wan-Bissaka could be handed the chance to establish himself under the Argentine tactician next season.

The 52-year-old prefers a solid backline for his style of play and Wan-Bissaka would be an ideal fit. However, Mourinho could yet dent Atletico’s plans of pursuing the defender.

Former United duo Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have excelled under him at Roma. Wan-Bissaka could be tempted to take a similar route at the end of the campaign.

Eric Bailly has also been linked with the Giallorossi lately.
