Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is scheduled to return to full training ahead of the pre-season friendly against Real Madrid on Wednesday, according to The Athletic.
The France international suffered a hamstring tear in the final game of the 2022/23 Premier League season against Fulham. He has since been going through his rehabilitation.
Martial has had individual work-out sessions over the past few weeks, and he is now on course to train with his teammates for the first time during the pre-season campaign.
The Red Devils are currently treating his comeback with caution, considering his recent injury history. Manager Erik ten Hag will only select him when convinced of his fitness.
Martial faces make-or-break season with United
The 27-year-old had a disappointing 2022/23 season with the Red Devils. He was productive up front with nine goals and three assists, but played only 1,441 minutes.
The former Monaco ace missed a staggering 29 games with injury concerns. This is a prime reason why Ten Hag is determined to bring in a new striker this summer.
The Frenchman is no longer a reliable figure for the first-team, and next season could be a make-or-break for him. He could be offloaded if his injury woes continue.
United currently have Marcus Rashford who can play up front, but the manager has also tried experimenting with Jadon Sancho in the false nine position.
Sancho had another underwhelming campaign with United, but he could get a new lease of life if he can continue to impress from his new role in Ten Hag’s system.
United are not close to signing a new centre-forward, but it is widely known that they are weighing up an opening offer for Atalanta wonderkid Rasmus Hojlund.
