Ruben Amorim admits Man United missed Amad Diallo vs Brentford after superb Sunderland display

Manchester United registered a 2-0 Premier League win over Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko got on the scoresheet in the first half to clinch three crucial points for their manager Ruben Amorim.

Speaking after the game, Amorim praised Amad Diallo who put on an energetic display after returning to the starting XI.

He said (via ManUtd.com): “I think he defended really well.

“Attacking, we already know that he’s really good. Every time he has the ball one against one, he’s giving us a lot of chances to score.

“He can help Bryan to play more inside and worry more with the runs behind the defenders.

“We miss a lot Amad against Brentford, especially when we’re [in the] second half, 2-1, to have an extra guy like Amad, it’s massive.

“So, we are really pleased with him. He did a very good job.”

Diallo has endured a tough start to the 2025-26 campaign.

He had struggled to show his usual cutting edge in recent matches, failing to consistently beat defenders or influence the attack.

He even wiped his Instagram clean after receiving backlash for posting a photo with Alejandro Garnacho following the win over Chelsea last month.

The Ivorian was absent from the squad that lost 3-1 to Brentford last weekend due to a tragedy at home.

All eyes were on Diallo today and he did not disappoint.

The 23-year-old completed all 38 of his passes across the full 90 minutes.

He created three chances, finished with the most dribbles (3) of any player, and showed surprising grit by winning eight duels while drawing three fouls.

He played a key role in Mason Mount’s goal and came close to doubling United’s lead with a thunderous strike after cutting inside from the right.

Though he did not register a goal or assist, his performance was a clear reminder of the talent at his disposal.

The former Atalanta man used his trickery to stretch Sunderland’s defence, giving Mbeumo the freedom to drift inside and attack dangerous pockets of space.

Diallo must keep his focus on developing his game and answering his critics through his performances.
