Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt return to training on eve of Athletic Bilbao clash

Manchester United have been handed a major double injury boost as they enter the business end of the season.

Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt participated in training at Carrington on Wednesday, as confirmed by ManUtd.com.

Diallo was initially expected to miss the remainder of the campaign after suffering ankle ligament damage in February.

However, the 22-year-old has made an impressive recovery and is back at a critical time for the club.

De Ligt had been sidelined with a foot problem picked up earlier this month.

Their return comes as a huge lift for United ahead of Thursday’s high-stakes Europa League semi-final clash with Athletic Bilbao.

While the first leg may come too soon for the pair, there is optimism they could feature in Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Brentford.

Manager Ruben Amorim is expected to rotate his squad heavily for the weekend encounter.

Diallo and De Ligt could be eased back into action with substitute appearances in the second half.

If they prove their match fitness, Amorim is likely to restore both players to his starting line-up in the second leg against Bilbao.

Diallo has been in superb form this campaign, bagging nine goals and eight assists.

Most of his contributions came under Amorim’s leadership after being overlooked by former coach Erik ten Hag.

Midfielder Toby Collyer was also seen undergoing an individual training session as he continues his recovery from a muscle issue.

The Red Devils must win the Europa League to salvage their 2024-25 season.

Amorim currently has a toothless attack and he will hope to have Diallo fully ready for the second leg next week.
