Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho will have a new shirt number for the current campaign after he was pictured wearing the number 17 jersey on his brother’s X account.
The Argentine was fancied to get the iconic number 7 shirt after the departure of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo, but United handed it to Mason Mount following his arrival from Chelsea.
There was a mixed reaction from the fans towards the surprise selection, but Garnacho has now switched from no.49 to no.17, which was previously worn by midfielder Fred.
United have yet to confirm the news, but Garnacho’s brother Roberto has already disclosed it on X.
We are not surprised by Garnacho’s decision to pick no 17. Ronaldo wore the number for Portugal during the early part of his career and it could have been a reason behind his choice.
Meanwhile, it is clear that Rasmus Hojlund won’t don the no 17 jersey as reported by several sources. He could possibly get the no.11 shirt with Mason Greenwood due to leave.
United have confirmed that Greenwood won’t restart his career at United, and the club are expected to sell, loan him out or terminate his contract before the transfer deadline.
Greenwood has been offered to Serie A side Lazio, according to Fabrizio Romano.
His departure would allow Hojlund to take the no 11 jersey which he currently wears for Denmark.
The Dane has been nursing a back issue since his arrival from Atalanta but could make his debut against Arsenal, having already spent a week training with the first-team squad.
It remains to be seen whether manager Erik ten Hag is prepared to start him on Sunday.
