Al-Watan has provided an update after their report that Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani has won the race to buy Manchester United.
The Qatar newspaper made the claim last night and it quickly went viral.
However, their Editorial Director insists the claim was based on what the international media have reported for a while.
The Mirror claimed Al-Watan is owned by Sheikh Jassim’s father Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.
However, the newspaper says that is false, and the update provided on the takeover is not an exclusive story.
The Qatar Islamic Bank chairman has been in the race to buy Man United since last November.
However, he is facing stiff competition from British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Man United fans were elated after Al Watan’s update, but they will have to wait for an official update from the club.
A preferred bidder could be named this week as the legal teams of both bidders finalise deal details with the Raine Group.
Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed and it will not be surprising if the week ends without any progress.
Man United owners want all the money they can get for their club, but neither Sheikh Jassim nor Ratcliffe have met their £6 billion asking price.
The Glazers have contacted Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi in an attempt to persuade Sheikh Jassim to increase his bid.
The QIB chairman tabled a fifth bid last week, leaving his team confident of their chances of pipping Ratcliffe to the Old Trafford club.
