Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka delivered a disappointing performance during the 1-1 Premier League draw at Brentford last night.
The Red Devils went into the game at the Gtech Community Stadium with the chance to close the gap on Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League race.
They started off positively in the first few minutes, but Brentford dominated the proceedings thereafter. The Bees piled the pressure, creating numerous chances on goal.
Mason Mount almost won the game for United with a smash and grab goal in the 96th minute, but Kristoffer Ajer equalised for the Bees within moments of the restart.
United had an off day in different parts of the field. There were several poor displays and in our view, Wan-Bissaka was the most disappointing from the left-back role.
The 26-year-old had a relatively good outing from the position in the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, but we saw nothing of that sort against the Bees last night.
Wan-Bissaka made a few clearances and tackles which are expected from him, but his positioning was poor and he was often overlapped by the opposition with ease.
Looking at the statistics, Wan-Bissaka made five clearances and three tackles, but he was guilty of losing possession on 12 occasions and failed to win any of his aerial duels.
However, the glaring concern throughout the game was his lack of control. It was evident that the Bees targeted his side. He left plenty of space behind with his overlapping runs.
Aside from this, he was also caught napping in his own defence. He escaped a tight offside call from which Ivan Toney scored, but was partly responsible for the equaliser.
Wan-Bissaka’s slow decision-making put Toney onside in the 98th minute. The striker still had plenty of work to do, but eventually put the ball on a plate for Ajer to score.
In our view, Wan-Bissaka looked out of sorts defensively from left-back and manager Erik ten Hag may need to revert him to his preferred right-back role going forward.
With Victor Lindelof picking up an injury last night, the Dutchman may not have the option of playing the Swede. Diogo Dalot and Wan-Bissaka may need to swap places.
