‘A top player’: David de Gea backs Anthony Martial to step up after Marcus Rashford’s injury

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has backed Anthony Martial to step up following an untimely injury setback for Marcus Rashford.

Rashford suffered a groin injury in the 2-0 Premier League win over Everton on Saturday and manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he is sidelined for a ‘few games‘.

His absence is a huge blow for United, considering his brilliant scoring record but De Gea feels Martial can a ‘big player’ for the club, having returned to full fitness.

He told Manutd.com: “I hope so. We know what he is capable to do on the pitch. It’s so good. When he is fit and he is ready to play, he’s a top player. He can dribble, he can score, he can assist, so for sure he will be a big player for us.”

Martial has a big role to play for Man Utd

The Frenchman has played just 799 minutes in all competitions for United this term but he has still impressed with seven goals and two assists.

The 27-year-old has looked good in his limited playing time under Ten Hag but the big question is whether he can stay unscathed for the rest of the campaign.

Martial has picked up five separate injuries in the current season and United will be hoping that he can remain injury-free and contribute over the coming weeks.

A fit and firing Martial would be a huge boost for United, particularly with Rashford on the sidelines.

Rashford has been simply outstanding this season with 28 goals and 11 assists to his name and someone will have to step up in his short-term absence.

De Gea spoke fondly about Martial in his interview and it remains to be seen whether the £36 million signing can prove himself with goal contributions.

Martial is likely to lead the line against Sevilla in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final tonight.
