Louis Van Gaal has hinted that Manchester United could complete a “surprise signing” before the transfer deadline.
Speaking after United’s 1-0 win against Club America in their first pre-season friendly, the Dutchman stressed he was not worried by the lack of depth up-front, adding that United could add a surprise name to their forward line.
“We have Rooney, he can play in strikers’ position, and all media had written he should play there so I listen and now you put this question so don’t know what you want.
“Also Chicharito and maybe Wilson and maybe there comes a surprise. It’s a process. I’m not worried about that position.”
With Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao no longer at the club, Wayne Rooney, James Wilson and Javier Hernandez are the only recognised strikers at Van Gaal’s disposal, although Wilson and Hernandez are not guaranteed to be at the club when the season kicks off.
The former could be set for a loan spell at a Premier League, while the latter has attracted interest from a number of European clubs and it remains to be seen whether he fits in Van Gaal’s plans, although the United manager seemed open to give him a second chance.
“Hernandez is coming on July 25,” he said.
“He can prove himself and now Falcao and Van Persie are gone so his chances are better now.”
