Manchester United have put Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on “stand-by” while they wait to see whether David De Gea will remain at Old Trafford beyond the summer.
The Spaniard has been linked with a return to Madrid, with Real Madrid rumoured to be determined to make him Iker Casillas’ successor this summer, which would be a major blow for United given De Gea has been their best player over the last two seasons.
However, according to sources cited by ESPN‘s journalist Miguel Delaney, Spurs have been told by the 28-year-old that he would be open to the move as he wants regular Champions League football, which Spurs have not been able to guarantee this season.
United are understood to be willing to keep De Gea to Old Trafford but have moved towards a contingency plan, given the Spaniard is yet to commit to a long-term deal and might in fact not do so at all.
Meanwhile, United are also keeping tabs on Gareth Bale, who has endured a roller-coaster season at the Bernabeu.
According to ESPN, were United to accept that De Gea’s move to Real Madrid was inevitable, they would try to include the Welshman in the negotiations with the Spanish giants, just two years after Bale became the world’s most expensive player.
United’s interest in Bale would explain why the negotiations with PSV Eindhoven over Memphis Depay have not move forward, as United continue to monitor the Welshman’s situation.
