Manchester United kick off 2019 with a trip to Newcastle United this evening looking to make it four wins from four under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
We hammered Bournemouth 4-1 on Sunday to remain within eight points of the top four places with Chelsea in action at home to Southampton this evening.
Solskjaer has got us playing successful, attractive football once again, scoring 12 goals during the course of these three games. This evening’s opponents have had an extra 24 hours rest since their last game but will kickoff in 15th place, only three points above the relegation zone.
With rotations expected to be made, here is the team that I think will face Newcastle:
Goalkeeper: David de Gea
No clean sheets under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so far, David de Gea will continue in goal hoping to shut out Newcastle.
Defence: Diogo Dalot, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw
Diogo Dalot should come in to give the experienced Ashley Young a rest at right-back. The 19-year-old has looked impressive when he has started and will provide width and a good cross when going forward. Phil Jones will come in for the suspended Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof is the only other centre-back available to the caretaker manager. Ole has already confirmed that Matteo Darmian is the backup this evening. Luke Shaw is set to continue at left-back.
Midfield: Nemanja Matic, Fred, Paul Pogba
Nemanja Matic had a comfortable game versus Bournemouth so I think he’ll have no problem starting this one and could get a breather during next weekend’s FA Cup tie instead. Fred is well-rested so could come for Ander Herrera as part of our central midfield three. Paul Pogba never tires and has been in excellent form under Solskjaer – involved in six goals in 270 minutes (4 goals, 2 assists).
Attack: Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial
Marcus Rashford’s fatigue was brought up at Ole’s pre-match press conference on Tuesday so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Romelu Lukaku start after the striker came off the bench to bag a goal on Sunday. As we’re expecting to dominate possession and territory I can see Juan Mata coming in down the right wing. Anthony Martial should start down the left with Alexis Sanchez expected to make an appearance from the bench in the second half.
Here’s our team on paper:
