Manchester United entertain Newcastle United in Sunday’s Premier League game at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have registered three straight wins since the humiliating 6-3 derby loss at Manchester City, but their displays have been rather inconsistent.
Their European performances against Omonia were far from convincing. In midweek, they managed 34 shots, but could find the back of the net just once.
Scott McTominay bagged a last-gasp winner for a 1-0 victory. Erik ten Hag will expect a better showing tomorrow. Here are three players who need to step up.
Marcus Rashford
The England international was hugely disappointing against Omonia on Thursday. He had 10 shots on goal, but simply could not find the back of the net. Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was in fine touch, but Rashford had some clear-cut chances that went wide of the target. Ten Hag has challenged Rashford to be more clinical. The forward needs to redeem himself against the Magpies.
Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes has looked the shadow of the player that first arrived from Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese has an outstanding tally of 51 goals and 41 assists from just 138 outings for United, but his form since the back end of last season has been average. His goal contributions have dried up while he has been dispossessed too often. Fernandes needs to step up or his starting spot could come under the radar.
Luke Shaw
Shaw recently retained his starting spot in the Premier League amid Tyrell Malacia’s inconsistent showing after the international break. The left-back was decent against Everton last weekend, but much more is expected from him. He seems to be playing it safe to avoid errors. We would like him to be more attack-minded and create chances in the box as seen for his club and country during the last calendar year.
