Manchester United attacker Jesse Lingard is reportedly keen on staying put with the club next season rather than pursuing a fresh challenge elsewhere.
The 27-year-old’s form has been disappointing over the past 16 months where he has failed to make a single goalscoring contribution in the Premier League.
As a result, he has dropped down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he has barely been involved in the Premier League since the January arrival of Bruno Fernandes.
It has recently been claimed that Leicester City, Everton, West Ham United and Newcastle United could make bids to sign Lingard this summer but 90min reports that United won’t push him through the exit door.
Lingard is said to be keen on proving his worth to the manager and it is suggested that United may trigger the extension clause to prolong his stay for another 12 months from June 2021.
Lingard has generally featured for United in the number 10 and right-wing roles but he is understood to prefer playing in the former of those positions.
With Fernandes’ arrival, his prospects of claiming that spot have diminished while he has fierce competition from the likes of Juan Mata and Mason Greenwood on the right side of the attack.
The club are likely to pursue a new attacking midfielder and right-winger during the summer and that could further reduce the playing time for Lingard.
The United graduate has made a number of key contributions in the big games in the past but he would require a drastic change in fortunes to remain with the club beyond next season.
