Scott McTominay has been picked as the Manchester United Young Player of the Year by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell.
The 23-year-old was one of the leading performers for United during the first half of the season but he unfortunately picked up a knee injury on Boxing Day, which has seen him miss a major chunk of playing time since the turn of the year.
The midfielder has still managed 27 appearances for the club across all competitions. He has registered four goals in the process – one of which was a stellar 35-yard strike in the 2-0 derby win over Manchester City last month.
As a result, The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has chosen McTominay as his pick for the United Young Player of the Year and in our opinion, the Scot deserves to receive the same recognition at the club’s end of season awards ceremony.
With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm, there has been the emphasis on grooming young players from the academy and the likes of Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams have impressed with their displays during the current campaign.
Aside from the duo, last summer’s signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been a solid performer from the right-back position while Marcus Rashford, still 22, is experiencing the best season of his career with 19 goals scored across all competitions.
Still, McTominay probably edges them as the best young player this term, given he has shown that he can attack or defend depending on the game situation while also displaying leadership qualities with his commanding influence from the centre of the park.
Of course, the Scotland international is more of a box-to-box midfielder than a defensive one but his chances of consistent playing time seem to lie in the latter of those positions with Nemanja Matic likely to part ways with the club in the coming years.
