Manchester United are expected to be busy in the transfer market between now and the end of August, with several players already being strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.
One player who Jose Mourinho has been tracking since he joined United is Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale.
The transfer speculation of Bale joining Manchester United refuses to die down, and now reports in Spain are suggesting that the Welsh star is all but set to depart the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium this summer.
Spanish outlet El Confidencial claim that the 28-year-old himself has assumed that he will be leaving Real Madrid before the start of next season.
Gareth Bale didn’t play a single minute in Real Madrid’s 3-0 thrashing of Juventus in the Champions League midweek and is seeing less and less game time following the performances of Isco, Marco Asensio and Lucas Vasquez, matched by numerous injuries he has suffered during his time in the Spanish capital.
In all, Bale has suffered 20 injuries during his four-and-a-half years in Madrid, keeping him out of more than 70 matches as a result.
El Confidencial go on to say that Real Madrid have put Gareth Bale on the transfer market, with the player’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, claiming that both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest.
Tottenham would be little competition for us given they are unlikely to want to match either Real Madrid’s asking price nor Bale’s wages, let alone both.
However, Real Madrid are asking for €120 million (£105m) which is more than the €100 million they paid Tottenham back in 2013 when he was only 24 years old and hitting his prime.
Whilst the spending of English clubs has raised substantially over the past 12 months due to the significant television revenue, this would still be a considerable fee to pay for a player who is constantly suffering from injuries and whom will be 29 before the start of next season.
On his day, Gareth Bale is unplayable. He has pace and dribbling ability to take on any defender in the world, whilst he is also a goalscorer and playmaker. However, if we cannot be guaranteed he’ll be fit for 38 games a season then it would be a huge risk to take financially.
