Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has had a frustrating Premier League campaign and he has managed only 13 goal contributions thus far.
However, this does not mean that has been underperforming. The Portuguese has been rather let down by the forwards, who have failed to convert chances.
This season, Fernandes has managed more key passes (103) than Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (95).
The 28-year-old has also gone head-to-head with the Belgian for big chances created (29 to 31).
Fernandes and De Bruyne have netted six and seven goals respectively but there has been a drastic difference in the assist count.
While Fernandes has seven assists to his name, De Bruyne is leading the race for the Playmaker of the Season with 16 assists thus far.
We recently saw an article about United underperforming their xG and this is quite evident with their inability to convert shots into the form of goals.
In our view, United clearly need a marquee striker this summer that can take full advantage of Fernandes’ key passes and big chances created in the final third.
City have benefited from Erling Braut Haaland’s presence up front and United need someone of a similar calibre that can capitalise on scoring opportunities.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could be United’s answer to Haaland but the big question is whether Spurs will do business with a direct league rival.
There are other marquee options such as Victor Osimhen, Randal Kolo Muani and Goncalo Ramos but United may have to spend a nine-figure sum for one of them.
