10 days to go: Who will Man Utd sign before pre-season starts?

Manchester United will begin their pre-season early from June 27 with new manager Erik ten Hag aiming to shape the squad in his own image ahead of next season.

A number of key players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire won’t be present on the first day due to their recent international commitments.

They are expected to join the team a few weeks later. Ten Hag will still have several quality players to train at Carrington. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho will be among those.

Aside from the current squad, Ten Hag is obviously expected to bring players of his own. The Dutch tactician will be hoping that United can do their transfer business early.

Any new arrivals may not necessarily be involved from the off, but should provide relief to some fans, who are eagerly waiting for United to do something in the transfer market.

Here are few players that could be signed before pre-season starts

Frenkie de Jong – Barcelona

It is known publicly that De Jong is the priority midfield target for Ten Hag, having worked together at Ajax previously. The Netherlands international has been convinced to make the switch despite the lack of Champions League football, but a fee needs to be agreed.

While United are willing to pay around €70m plus €10m in add-ons, Barcelona seem reluctant to accept anything less than €80m upfront. With the Blaugrana needing to balance their books before June 30, United will be optimistic of securing De Jong’s services soon.

Antony – Ajax

The Brazil international had a terrific 2021/22 campaign at Ajax under Ten Hag. The right winger managed an impressive 22 goal contributions across all competitions before an ankle injury sidelined him. The minor setback is unlikely to hamper his chances of a summer move.

United are reportedly ‘confident‘ of securing a deal for the Sao Paulo graduate. It was recently claimed that a package of €60 million could be sufficient to seal the deal, and there has not been any major update since. The hierarchy could be working behind the scenes to sign him.

Jurrien Timber – Ajax

Timber was one of the first Ajax players to be linked with United after Ten Hag’s appointment. The 20-year-old defender is not known for his aerial prowess, but excels in all other facets including his tackling and interceptions. He is excellent with the ball at his feet.

The Red Devils opened talks with Ajax for him in late May. It has since emerged that he may have second thoughts over joining United in a World Cup year. Ten Hag could still convince him over a transfer by guaranteeing him regular minutes in central defence or at right-back. His versatility would be an added boost for United.
